First Annual Commercial GHG Forum
  • Past Stakeholder Activities and Members

March 14-15, 2001 in New York, NY

The GHG Center hosted an international forum, Commercial Greenhouse Gas Technology Solutions, in New York City, NY on March 14-15, 2001. The forum was organized based on input from forum partners and co-sponsors. The Center recognizes that GHG emission reduction is on the minds of many in government and industry, but control technologies often are not well documented, making it difficult to identify the best technology options, or even to identify what options are available. The idea behind the forum was to provide an open and unbiased venue for public debate and information exchange on a range of available GHG technologies, and to identify and examine commercial-ready GHG technologies. At the forum, industry and other organizations with active GHG mitigation programs showcased their accomplishments and future plans, vendors of commercial and near-commercial GHG mitigation and monitoring technologies described and displayed their products, and updates were provided on legislative actions, GHG trading, verification, and reporting initiatives.

Approximately 150 speakers, chairs, and attendees participated in this 2-day event, including individuals from 11 nations. In addition, there were 12 government and industry organizations providing financial support to the forum (The Government of Canada, Consolidated Edison of New York, Southern Company, Gas Technology Institute, Super Blue Box Recycling Corp., First Environment, the State Agency of Energy and Energy Resources - Bulgaria, EcoSmart Concrete, U.S. EPA Natural Gas STAR Program, Mariah Energy Corp., The IT Group, and the Industrial Center).

Two Plenary sessions were held at the forum. The first focused on efforts to mitigate GHG emissions by governments, private industry, and international bodies. The second provided an international panel of experts on GHG trading, reporting, verification, and certification. Technology areas addressed included distributed electrical power generation, oil and gas industry technologies, Canada's TEAM program technologies, energy efficiency, municipal solid waste management semiconductor, combined heat and power, transport, horticulture, commercial operations, small-scale biomass, refrigeration, waste management, biomass, landfills, and electricity generation. The forum closed with an Open Session for Delegates. This session allowed participants to network with colleagues, direct final questions to forum speakers and chairs, and to vote for the most promising technologies.

The input gained from the forum will help direct the GHG Center's focus during the next few years. Already, the forum has helped the GHG Center launch new performance verifications of technologies applicable to the municipal solid waste and distributed electrical generation areas. Since the forum, the GHG Center has also learned that some participants made important new connections, and that new GHG projects could begin as a result. The GHG Center was glad to hear that, and pleased to see the forum fulfilling one of its goals.

This forum was the first in a series of international meetings to provide a platform for industry to learn and exchange ideas on commercial GHG mitigation.

A CD of presentations was made available to attendees of the forum.
Inadvertently, the presentation by Paul Feron (TNO Environment, Energy and Process Innovation) was omitted.
